Czech Out This Czhili!

Downtown Flatonia is getting fired up for Czhilispiel 54, returning October 23–25, 2026. Chili, polka, Texas music, and a healthy dose of Czech and German tradition are all on the weekend menu!

A Little Czech, a Little German, a Lot of Flatonia

The festival has been part of the town since 1973, when it began during Flatonia’s centennial year as a fundraiser connected to the community’s need for a local doctor. Its unusual name nods to the town’s Czech and German heritage, pairing the Czech-inspired “z” with the German word “spiel.”

More than five decades later, Czhilispiel remains volunteer-driven, and the cook-off still keeps chili at the heart of the weekend. Saturday’s competitions include CASI-sanctioned chili, a hometown chili division for Flatonia residents, chili showmanship, and IBCA-sanctioned barbecue categories for chicken, pork spare ribs, and brisket. Beans, margaritas, Bloody Marys, and a kids’ burger cook-off also get their turn at the judges’ table.

There’s plenty on the schedule beyond the cookers. Saturday morning starts early with the 5K and 10K races, while arts-and-crafts and food vendors, a carnival, biergarten, and weekend activities keep downtown busy. Sunday brings the Grand Parade at noon, along with a car and truck show, children’s contests, tricycle races, and more.

Turn Up the Texas

The 2026 music lineup stretches across all three days. Friday features The Ghost Peppers and Bill Pekar. Saturday brings The Solis Brothers, The Isaac Jacob Band, Reagan Hicks, and Texas Unlimited Band. Sunday wraps up with The Fender Benders, The Sweet Emotions, and more. The full weekend schedule has event times, with individual music set times still to come.

Festivalgoers can grab tickets, check out Czhilispiel tees and merchandise, or see the local sponsors helping make the weekend happen.

After more than 50 years, Czhilispiel still knows exactly what makes a small-town festival stick around: local hands doing the work, traditions worth keeping, and enough chili, music, and friendly competition to bring everybody downtown. For one October weekend, Flatonia puts its heritage right in the middle of the street and invites everyone to join the party!
