Fall Is Flying South!
Texas does not need red leaves to prove autumn has arrived. In the Rio Grande Valley, one of the season’s biggest changes happens overhead, where migrating raptors turn September skies into a moving map.
Look Up, Not Out
At Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park in Mission, fall migration is already underway by late September.
The park sits along a major South Texas migration corridor, and September brings active raptor movement through the region. That makes the park’s Hawk Tower more than a good viewpoint. It becomes a front-row seat for one of fall’s quieter arrivals.
Visitors can check the park’s event calendar for current programs, including Hawk Watch opportunities scheduled after September 22. During those programs, birders gather with binoculars and spotting scopes to watch, identify and help count migrating birds moving through the Valley.
The September 26 Hawk Watch offers exactly that kind of morning: a chance to stand still for a while and realize the season is changing even if the thermometer is not particularly interested in cooperating.
That is part of the appeal. In South Texas, autumn can be less about what the trees are doing and more about what is passing above them.
Keep the Day Local
Afterward, Mission keeps the outing grounded.
Jitterz Coffee Bar roasts its own coffee in town, making it an easy stop before or after a morning in the park.
For something more substantial, Ana Liz Taqueria serves handmade tortillas and traditional Mexican cooking under chef Ana Liz Pulido, who received the 2024 James Beard Award for Best Chef: Texas.
The combination makes for a distinctly Rio Grande Valley kind of fall day: migrating hawks overhead, locally roasted coffee, and lunch that feels connected to the place rather than the season’s usual clichés.
Pumpkins and foliage can have October.
Late September in the Valley offers something subtler and, in its own way, more dramatic. Somewhere above South Texas, fall is already moving south.
