Plot Twists and Dice Rolls

Few feelings compare to rolling a natural 20 at exactly the right time. The whole table erupts, and somebody gives the lucky die a victory lap around the board. In Cedar Park, The Secret Lantern Books & Games has built an entire shop around that kind of shared joy. Tucked into an old bank building, it's part bookstore and part game shop, with a whole lot of community packed in between.

The shelves are carefully curated, stretching from epic fantasy and soul-stirring memoirs to manga and graphic novels. Board games and tabletop RPG starter kits sit nearby for anyone ready to roll. Gifts and goods from local artisans fill in the gaps, so nobody leaves empty-handed. When it's time to refuel, the in-store cafe and bar keep the coffee and drinks flowing. The real magic, though, is the calendar. There's an event almost every single day, from book clubs and author visits to one-shot TTRPG nights. Cosplay workshops and improv shows keep things lively, too. Every gathering reflects the shop's guiding idea: “Where misfits make their magic and find their next adventure.”

That welcome starts at the top. Founder Dianna Lora spent nearly 20 years producing video games before building this Afro-Latina woman-owned shop. She designed it as a place outside home and work where people of every background can gather and feel safe and seen. The conversation doesn't stop at closing time, either, since more than 600 members keep chatting on the store's Discord server. All that heart helped earn The Secret Lantern Books & Games their 2026 Best of Texas Award. Somewhere in Cedar Park tonight, another table is cheering for a very lucky roll.
