Recipes Measured by Heart
Every family has at least one recipe that never quite fits on an index card. It lives in somebody’s hands, measured by feel and finished with a little instinct. In Waxahachie, husband-and-wife team Sara and Chef Carlos have built an entire restaurant out of recipes like that. D Restaurant Latin Cuisine – Waxahachie opened in May 2023, bringing two family kitchens and two cultures under one roof. Sara started cooking beside her mother in Honduras when she was just seven. Chef Carlos, from Veracruz, grew up helping his mother sell traditional antojitos and watching his grandmother make fresh cheese.
That shared heritage shapes a menu of modern Latin American cuisine inspired by Honduras, Mexico, and beyond. Golden pupusas arrive with crunchy curtido, and ropa vieja shares the table with yuca frita. Mole enchiladas bring the flavors of Veracruz to Ellis County. It’s all in keeping with the kitchen’s motto: “Two Cultures. One Kitchen. Endless Flavor.” The hospitality travels well, too. Catering ranges from corporate lunches and intimate gatherings to weddings and full-service events. Back at the restaurant, a private dining space welcomes everything from baby showers to rehearsal dinners.
That blend of family, flavor, and warm hospitality has made D part of the Waxahachie and Ellis County dining community in just a few short years. Saturday brunch puts pancakes and chilaquiles on the same table. Colorful cocktails and a kid-friendly menu mean nobody gets left out, while guests also visit from across the DFW area. Now Sara and Chef Carlos are celebrating another milestone: being named the 2026 Best of Texas Award winner for Latin American Restaurant. Somewhere in that kitchen, the recipes are still being measured by feel.
