Spots, Goats, and Good Dogs

Spots, Goats, and Good Dogs

Somewhere in almost every family photo album, there’s a kid beaming beside a dog that’s nearly as big as they are. Neither one is posing. They’ve simply decided they’re best friends, and the camera happened to catch it. Kimberley Hur has spent close to 20 years helping friendships like that begin. Her business, Hur Family Farm (HurCompany.com), runs out of a working farm in Cumby.

Hur’s love of farm life started early. As a child, she spent summers on her great-grandparents’ farm near the Great Smoky Mountains. She milked cows by hand there and fed biscuits to the mountain cur dogs after supper. That same hands-on spirit shapes how she places Catahoula Leopard Dogs today. Families start by watching a short video and reading the AKC Canine Good Citizen pledge. Then they fill out an online application and text Hur about the puppy that’s caught their eye. She’s one of just two breeders listed with the AKC as a registered AKC-FSS Catahoula breeder. The farm also raises Anatolian Shepherds that guard livestock, and both breeds keep waiting lists. Puppies headed out of state can travel door to door with USDA-licensed transporters. Out in the pasture, registered Nigerian Dwarf and Nubian dairy goats round out the crew.

The farm isn’t finished growing, either. A new main barn and pond have already gone up, and fruit and nut orchards are on the way. Hur also plans to host homesteading classes so others can learn the self-sufficient skills she picked up in Tennessee. Some of her Catahoulas have even appeared on FOX 4’s Good Day in Dallas-Fort Worth. That devotion, from the first application to the final drive home, helped earn Hur Family Farm their 2026 Best of Texas Award.
