Choosing a candle scent is one thing. Building it yourself, after sniffing your way through a wall of fragrance oils and debating the merits of sandalwood versus vanilla, makes the whole thing a little more interesting.
Texas candle studios are giving the usual afternoon outing a hands-on upgrade, with spaces where guests can experiment, pour, and leave with something that smells exactly the way they want it to.
Pick, Mix, Pour
In Spring, Mixology Candle Bar starts with the vessel, then sends guests into its fragrance library to find oils worth blending. During the candle-making class, candlemakers guide participants through adding their chosen scents and pouring the finished candle. The $25 class fee reserves a spot, while vessels are selected and purchased separately.
The scent possibilities get even wider at Rocky Creek Candle Company in Fairview. Its studio has more than 100 fragrances, giving visitors plenty of room to experiment before settling on a custom blend. The candle-pouring experience walks guests through choosing a vessel, mixing fragrance oils, pouring the candle, and adding a personalized label. Candles aren’t the only option either, with bath products and home fragrances also available to customize.
Fort Worth adds a little more purpose to the pour. The Worthy Co is a nonprofit providing job training and employment opportunities for survivors of trafficking. Its Candle Studio Experience is a one-hour class where guests choose a fragrance and vessel before learning how to pour their own candle. One hundred percent of class proceeds support the organization’s mission.
A Scent of Your Own
Over in Katy, Heart Notes Candle Bar & Boutique treats fragrance as something worth lingering over. Its guided candle bar gives guests a wide selection of fragrance notes to combine into a signature scent. During the DIY experience, visitors reserve a seat, choose what they’d like to create, and pay for their finished item at the studio. Standard appointments run about 90 minutes, with candles beginning at $49 total per guest, including the seating fee.
Across all four studios, the fun comes from having a hand in every decision, right down to the vessel on the table and the scent that follows you home.
