Room for Every Kind of Dancer

There's a particular kind of pride reserved for recital night: the seat saved three rows back, the phone held sideways for video. It's the moment a five-year-old in a tutu finds the beat and holds it, if only for four counts. In Abilene, a lot of those moments trace back to Big Country Arts Academy, where the parking lot fills up most weeknights well before five o'clock.

The range surprises people who assume a dance studio means one track: recital or bust. Big Country offers pathways for every child, starting with Tiny Tots at two and a half. The track keeps going through Elevate Academy classes built for teenagers and adults who never stopped wanting to dance. Between those bookends sits a Leveled Dance Track for skill-building and a competition team for the ones chasing trophies. There's also Shining Stars, an adaptive program built for dancers of all abilities. Owner and creative director Amy Kotara has spent decades earning the credentials behind all of it. She trained under noted teachers across Texas and performed with Ballet Lubbock before she ever picked up a whistle to run rehearsal. That range of experience is exactly why the studio can back up its own slogan: "Building Confidence on the Stage of Life."

None of that happens without a full house of instructors and a schedule that runs most weeknights until eight o'clock. It's the kind of steady, unglamorous consistency that just earned Big Country Arts Academy their 2026 Best of Texas Award. It's recognition that tracks with what families in Abilene already knew from recital night. The parking lot will keep filling up at 4:30, and somewhere inside, another five-year-old will find the beat.
