Saddle Up, Kingsville!
Kingsville knows how to throw a weekend, especially when cowboy breakfast, barbecue smoke, live music, and a little holiday sparkle all land on the same calendar.
Ranch Hand Weekend returns November 20–21, bringing two days of South Texas ranching tradition to King Ranch, downtown Kingsville, and Texas A&M University–Kingsville. The celebration has been part of the community since 1990, but this year’s expanded lineup gives locals even more ground to cover.
Friday evening starts downtown with the Community Christmas Tree Lighting from 5 to 9 p.m. Shopping, entertainment, live music, and the annual lighting ease the city into the weekend before the boots hit the dirt Saturday morning.
Saturday’s Game Plan
From 7 to 11 a.m. Saturday, the Ranch Hand Breakfast opens King Ranch to guests arriving in their own vehicles for an outdoor, ranch-style meal. Team roping, cowboy demonstrations, live music, storytelling, and old-time cow camp cooking are part of the morning, with breakfast tickets priced at $15.
Then the action heads back downtown. The free Ranch Hand Festival runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., filling the streets with local and regional vendors, food, family activities, live music, demonstrations, and the Roundup Car Show.
The newest wrinkle comes with some serious bragging rights. The first King Ranch BBQ Competition is sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbeque Society and offers a $35,000 total prize pool. Up to 50 teams can compete, while festivalgoers can get in on the eating through public tasting opportunities.
The weekend also spreads beyond the ranch and downtown. At 3 p.m., the Kingsville Symphony Orchestra performs its King Ranch Celebration at Texas A&M University–Kingsville, featuring guest violinist Dr. Jose Flores. Later that evening, the free Ranch Hand Concert closes out the celebration, with doors opening at 7 p.m. and the show beginning at 8.
That mix of ranch tradition, downtown gathering, music, and food is exactly what gives Ranch Hand Weekend its local footing. The event is presented with support from the City of Kingsville and its community partners, with proceeds benefiting selected local charities.
